Scientific before Scientific was Cool! Part 1

Revelation Knowledge – A divine revelation inspired by God.   Have you ever had one of those “V-8” moments where God dropped something into your heart that was way above your normal level of comprehension?  To be honest, you knew that you were not intelligent enough to gain that knowledge on your own and it had to be God?  I know I have.

In a change up from my normal postings, I’m going to look at a few scientific facts found in the Bible that could have only been given through Revelation Knowledge.  While it must be understood that the intent and purpose of the Bible is primarily spiritual in nature and not so much scientific, I believe God did drop a few nuggets here and there for mankind to find.  My hope is that, if you have been struggling with faith and the existence of God, you will see that He not only exists but desires for us to know His infallible goodness found through His Word.

The God of Hydrology (Study of Water)

Job…There are many sermons that can be preached concerning the Book of Job.  One of them is to stay away from your three nutty friends.  However, one undeniable truth is that Job contains some really cool scientific facts; facts that were not understood until many, many years afterwards.   One of those facts is found in Job 36:27-31 which describes the “Water Cycle.”

“For He draws up the drops of water, they distill rain from the mist, 28 which the clouds pour down, they drop abundantly upon mankind.” 29 “Can anyone understand the spreading of the clouds or the thundering of His pavilion? 30 “Behold, He spreads His lightning around Him [against the dark clouds], And He covers the depths of the sea. 31

On a side note, the speaker in this passage is Elihu.  Elihu was the smart youngster who kept his mouth shut until he could no longer stand the nonsense talk of Job and his three friends.  Basically he, “What Fer’d” Job and his three friends.  For you non-country folk, “What Fer’d” means he set them straight in a not so subtle way.

In a nutshell, the water cycle can be explained as follows.  The sun heats up the water in the ocean causing it to evaporate.  Once evaporation occurs, water molecules rise into the atmosphere where they are cooled.  This cooling process causes condensation which in turn forms clouds.  Eventually, when the accumulation of moisture becomes too heavy, rain droplets begin to form.  The droplets then fall to the earth in the form of rain where it replenishes the earth.  The run off of the rain then goes back into the ocean where the process begins all over again.

It wasn’t until the late 1500’s A.D., that the theory of the water cycle was written about by Bernard Pallisy.  However, I believe the Lord gave this revelation knowledge to Elihu so that he could make right some very wrong theology.  Therefore, Elihu will now be known as scientific before scientific was cool.  Be blessed.

  1. Patrick, I absolutely love this post, and I’m looking forward to the series. When I teach the water cycle, I start with a glass of water and ask a student to take a drink. My question is: “How old is that water you’re drinking?” When I tell them the water has been around since day 2, they usually ask how that’s possible. Until now, I haven’t had a good scriptural reference to explain how old water is. This is great. Thanks for sharing this. What’s next?

  2. Awesome post. Well said. Years before we had anesthesia, God causes Adam to fall asleep before removing his rib. That’s compassionate and thoughtful and seems like common sense today, but it’s taken people thousands of years to even create anesthesia. Until very recent history, just going to the dentist was a gruesome experience.

Jewish people who practiced some of the ancient biblical laws around cleanliness and handling of blood, tended to have patients who lived a lot longer, and so Jewish doctors were in great demand. This was long before we even understood germ theories and these guys were already washing their hands and preventing cross contamination which leads to inflection. They were doing it for religious reasons, but there is sound science behind it.

Good post. Amazing what the author of the Bible knows…could it be that the Author created it? =)
